What is a flat sheet? A flat sheet is the top sheet on a bed: a plain rectangular sheet with no elastic, laid over the fitted sheet and under the duvet or blanket, then tucked at the foot and sides. Where a fitted sheet grips the mattress, a flat sheet lies loose, so it is cut larger than the bed to allow for tucking, which is why one flat sheet can serve two mattress widths. Hotels use both sheets together; the flat sheet keeps the duvet cover cleaner for longer and, on warm nights, is often all you need.
Ours is the Horrockses white flat sheet in 180 thread count percale, the same crisp, soft poly-percale as our fitted sheets: it washes well, dries fast and does not crease easily, made for the hospitality industry and just as good at home. Horrockses has been making bed sheets since 1791, and these are made in South Africa.
Flat sheet sizes in South Africa — three sizes cover every bed:
- Single/three-quarter flat sheet — fits 91 × 188 and 107 × 188 cm mattresses
- Double/queen flat sheet — fits 137 × 188 and 152 × 188 cm
- King/super king flat sheet — fits 183 × 188 and 200 × 200 cm
Choose by the larger bed if you are unsure; a flat sheet with more to tuck is never a problem.
Complete the bed with a fitted sheet, pillowcases and a duvet cover in the same white percale, and see bedding for the full range of bed sheets and linen. Towel Kingdom has supplied flat sheets to homes and guest houses since 1994, from four branches in and around Durban and online.
